Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment and preliminary site inspection of two areas within Victoria Wharf, proposed for improvement works, was undertaken. Sufficient evidence was identified to conclude that an upstanding limestone knoll forming a remnant of the Cattedown limestones was likely to embody cavities large enough to contain in situ interpretable archaeological material. Information gathered also determined that a stretch of mud bank within the Cattewater (a natural harbour known to contain historic wrecks dating from the late Middle Ages) was the natural resting place for vessels blown from moorings off Mountbatten Point.
