Abstract:
A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken as the pits were excavated on the line of the existing gas main or connections. All the pits outside the line of Ashford Road lay within an area of post-medieval tenement plots, and deposits of cultivation soil were identified to depths of 0.50-0.65m around Orchard Way, and 1.0m around the Mede. Exposures of undisturbed natural subsoil were recorded at depths of 0.24m below ground level in Ashford Road, 0.65m in Orchard Way and 1.0m in The Mede. Archaeological features were identified in five s. it It was not possible to establish the extent and function of Cuts 503 (in Pit 3) and 527 (in Pit 26), as they had been truncated by service trenching. Neither of them contained finds. The steep-sided linear cut 505 (in Pit 4) contained no dating evidence, but from its character and position could possibly be part of a Roman military ditch. Cut 512 (in Pit 10) was probably a linear feature. It produced no finds, but its orientation and position may indicate that it was a boundary ditch of post-medieval date between two tenement plots. Feature 519 contained finds of Roman date, but as it cut what were interpreted as post-medieval and possibly medieval cultivation soils, this material was thought to be residual. It was not possible to establish if the cut was a pit or linear feature. If it was linear, its alignment does not correspond with that of the tenement plots. [Au(abr)]
