Abstract: |
A desk based assessment of a proposed development site was undertaken. Prehistoric flints, a bronze age urn and late iron age huts had been recorded in the surrounding area. Late iron age or early Roman human skulls had also been found. Roman buildings and several major structures, including a 2nd century amphitheatre, a fort and the city wall, lay nearby. Two Roman roads may have crossed the site. Buildings and pits dating from the 9th century and later had been excavated in the vicinity. Part of the site itself had been built on by the late 12th century. It was concluded that the excavation of geotechnical trial pits should be monitored so that an archaeological strategy could be formulated. [AIP] |
