Abstract:
A desk-based assessment and a programme of geophysical survey was undertaken of the site proposed for redevelopment. The site was already known to contain some surviving industrial archaeological features related to the North Pit, and to have been the site of a farm with possible pre-industrial origins. The desk-based assessment did not reveal any positive evidence for land use within the assessment area before the 17th/18th century. The identifiable usage from that period was agricultural and industrial, including two branches of a waggonway, existing in 1777 (and thus almost certainly of timber construction), and two coal pits operating at the same date with associated buildings and infrastructure. The geophysical survey demonstrated that sub-surface features had survived, principally associated with post-medieval agriculture and one of the waggonways and the North Pit. Geophysics also suggested the presence of a possible enclosure, which could not be identified on the historic mapping, and may thus have been of early date. The potential survival of the early timber waggonway and colliery remains within the assessment area was important, and the possible existence of an earlier feature indicated by geophysics needed further investigation. Accordingly, a programme of archaeological trial trenching to investigate the degree of survival of these features was recommended. [Au(abr)]
