Abstract:
19 trial trenches were excavated and 1.4ha of fieldwalking was undertaken on a proposed clay quarry site. This work followed a desk-based assessment and geophysical survey of the proposed quarry. The majority of the trial trenches within the proposed development site contained only the remains of ridge and furrow cultivation of probable post-medieval date. Evaluation in the area of Hunter's House had established limited survival of upstanding structures with occupation possibly dating back to the late 18th century. Ditch-type features within trenches 21, 21A, 21B and 24 in the north-western part of the development area probably represented part of a field system of unknown date but which predated the ridge and furrow cultivation. The absence of finds and the small number of associated features made the presence of settlement activity in this area unlikely. Flint recovered from fieldwalking covered a wide date range and its occurrence probably related to the elevated topographical location at the north-west corner of the site area rather than settlement activity.
