Abstract:
An archaeological assessment was undertaken following the granting of outline planning permission for the residential redevelopment of the site. The main consideration in recommending a suitable course of action was that the archaeological and historical evidence indicated that the site lay close to or within the historic core of the medieval settlement. This was reflected in the inclusion of the site within an 'Archaeological Priority Area' in the Borough Unitary Development Plan. The cartographic and documentary evidence suggested that the site had been developed and redeveloped on several occasions in post-medieval and recent times. However, there was no evidence to suggest that this development had led to extensive truncation of the archaeologically relevant levels on the site, although it was inevitable that some disturbance would have occurred. Archaeological investigations in the Colne Valley had indicated a high potential for late Upper Palaeolithic and early Mesolithic sites to be preserved in areas of alluvial deposits. Both the location of the proposal site adjacent to alluvial deposits and the close proximity to both the Three Ways Wharf site and the Colne River further increased the archaeological potential for the proposal area. There was a possibility for the presence of medieval deposits and in early post-medieval times (16th century), there was documentary evidence for a brewhouse on the site. The report recommended field evaluation of the site. [Au(adp)]
