Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment revealed that antiquarian diggings in the 19th and early 20th century had not disturbed the Roman villa, near the southern boundary. In the western part of the site there were three earthwork enclosures, all thought to be of medieval origin, two of these, in Henley and Holt Wood, contained medieval structures. Both the sites represented rare non-moated medieval enclosures, exceptional due to their close proximity. Regardless of the final interpretation of the site, its location close to the other medieval enclosures made it part of a possible group of medieval sites of exceptional high interest. The scheduling of the Ledgers Park site was recommended on its group interest. Historical research at Chelsham was hampered by a lack of surviving documents. Fieldwork undertaken during this project failed to locate any significant flint scatters, but Ridge and furrow earthworks were identified under pasture in Ledgers Park. [Au(abr)] |
