Abstract: |
The excavation of three evaluation trenches prior to the development of the site uncovered evidence of early medieval settlement. Occupation levels had been truncated by post-medieval ploughing but the remains of at least twelve ditches were found. Although they were aligned broadly east to west the pattern suggested that they predated the London Road and may have been related to the Late Saxon developments uncovered in the vicinity of the site.
