Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the replacement of the exisiting cobbled surface at the northern end of the Market Place. Features identified included an area of cobbling 0.5 metres below the present level of the market place representing three distinct phases, with one sherd of 15th century pottery being recovered from the earlier phase; a surface water drain formed from bricks and pantiles set in red clay probably associated with Victorian drainage; a large area of disturbance between the cobbling and the surface water drain; and five cellars.
