Abstract:
A field evaluation was undertaken, consisting of eight machine excavated trenches at Stallards Place, in respect of a planning application for residential development of the site. The natural red clay was exposed in all the trenches and was shown to be overlain by a layer of soil containing Roman pottery indicating that the site was first occupied during the 2nd-4th century AD and was likely to have been utilized for cultivation. On the east side of the site, near the existing road and constructed within the surface of this layer, were two gullies, a ditch, a post hole, and a probable beam slot. On the north side of the site, a layer of Roman refuse containing pottery and animal bone had also accumulated above the Roman plough soil to form a midden deposit. Occupation of the site appeared to have continued to a limited extent during the post-Roman period as evidenced by a single medieval gully, although the site appeared to have been continuously cultivated, which resulted in the accumulation of a thick layer of later plough soil observed across the site. This plough soil sealed the Roman deposits and produced a few sherds of medieval pottery. This later cultivation activity resulted in truncation of the upper level of the Roman deposits. [Au(adp)]
