Abstract: |
The evaluation was undertaken within an area located in proximity to sites of Romano-British occupation. Saxon activity had been recorded just north of the site and took the form of two sunken-floored huts dated to the 8th century. A previous geophysical survey had identified several magnetic anomalies of possible archaeological origin. Thirteen trenches were excavated to examine these anomalies, as well as other parts of the site that lacked geophysical signals. The excavations identified possible archaeological remains in the form of two gullies and a ditch. Although no dating evidence was retrieved from the features, it was assumed that the gullies were Roman. The ditch was identified as being post-medieval in date due to its position on top of the subsoil which overlay the gullies. A single fragment of 15th to 17th century pottery was recovered from the site. [Au(adp)] |
