Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a warehouse and storage facility identified that a Lower Palaeolithic flint handaxe had been found at the site, and that prehistoric artefacts of all periods and sherds of possible Roman pottery had been recorded in the surrounding area. A Saxon settlement was likely to have existed in Mortlake. The site was occupied by the manor house of the Archbishop of Canterbury, later a palace, from at least 1095. The original medieval church and cemetery had lain within the perimeter of the site, and a thoroughfare dating back at least as far as the 16th century had crossed it. 19th century buildings associated with the brewing industry, some of which had been identified as being of Townscape Merit, lay within the proposal area. Parts of the site also lay within a Conservation Area, an Area of Special Character and an Archaeological Priority Area. It was noted that industrial use of the site had been accompanied by a certain amount of modern disturbance. Archaeological trial trenching was recommended. [AIP]
