Abstract: |
Two trenches were excavated within the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Clifford's Fort, North Shields. The investigation established the levels at which the Riverside Battery wall and the Counterscarp wall were constructed, and that the postulated exterior ditch was not present on the southern side of the Fort. The investigation also established that the structures in the south-east corner of the Fort associated with the late 19th century mining depot had recently been largely removed and that part of the inner revetment of the original Fort survived, albeit severely truncated.
