Abstract: |
Seven trial trenches, five of which measured 20m by 2m while two measured 10m by 2m, were excavated across the site as an archaeological evaluation. This revealed that the majority of the site had been terraced during the construction of the car-park. This would have removed any shallow archaeological features that may have been present. Within four of the trenches a number of struck and burnt flints were recovered from the surviving hill-wash which overlay the natural clay. These flints themselves were randomly spread and found within the hill-wash. The flints were important as they suggested prehistoric activity within the area but not necessarily on the site of the Water Palace. The flints may have been re-deposited on to the site during modern ploughing. [Au(adp)] |
