Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a housing development. Documentary and cartographic sources indicated that part of the proposed development area coincided with the site of an intermittent medieval/post-medieval fairground. Allotments had also lain on the site. During the evaluation, no evidence of archaeological activity was identified. The absence of artefacts from the topsoil contrasted with a nearby site which was also thought to have been the location of a fair, and where numerous medieval and post-medieval artefacts had been recovered. It was concluded that features or deposits of archaeological significance were unlikely to have ever been present at the site. [Au(abr)] |
