Abstract:
Castle Cliffe, a stone building at the south-west corner of the former bailey of Hereford Castle, includes masonry features probably of late 13th century date. Originally part of the castle and once described as the Governor's House, it became a bridewell after the Civil War. Re-roofing of a lean-to roof on the north-western side of Castle Cliffe exposed sections of stone walling which had hitherto been hidden. The City of Hereford\nArchaeology Unit was commissioned by Hereford City Council to carry out an outline survey and prepare a report on its findings. The survey work included a series of plans and sections of the part of the building being repaired and those areas directly underneath (ie it focussed on the interior of the western bay of the building complex). The survey confirmed that Castle Cliffe represents the only upstanding medieval fragment of the once formidable Hereford Castle, probably dating to the later 13th century. Its general layout, as far as can be judged, suggests some type of domestic range and the size may indicate either that it was a series of lodgings, or one quite spacious dwelling. If the latter case holds true, then its traditional identification as the Governor's Lodgings cannot be ruled out.[AIP]
