Abstract:
A desk-based study and buildings and earthwork surveys were carried out in response to redevelopment proposals relating to a site which contained a number of standing industrial buildings. Traces of demolished buildings were also present. Trial excavation at the site in 1984 had revealed ditches, one of which dated from the 12th-13th centuries, and a rubble spread which included large quantities of 14th-15th century pottery. Earthworks in the western part of the site consisted of numerous well-defined and wide-spaced ditches to the south of a wide embankment. A number of the ditches coincided with boundaries marked on the 1767 Inclosure map, whilst others appeared to folllow the same alignment. Further mounds and ditches were also recorded. The area had been developed from the 18th century to the present for the transportation and storage of bulky ocmmodities, based upon the canal system and subsequently the railway. Many of the former buildings and structures associates with these activities had been demolished, but four may have contained evidence of late Victorian and Edwardian landuse. The site was crossed by the Grand Union Canal. [AIP]
