Abstract: |
Documentary, topographic and geophysical surveys were undertaken at three sites of potentially national importance along a proposed pipeline route. The sites comprised the earthworks of a dam and an iron-smelting furnace; an area of ridge and furrow associated with a deserted medieval settlement; and a possible early industrial site. The latter was confirmed to be the site of a lead-smelting mill, probably of the 17th-18th centuries, which could have been the previously unlocated Walton Mill. Documentary evidence indicated that a settlement had lain at the DMV site since the 13th century, and geophysical survey indicated areas of industrial use, possibly post-medieval charcoal making, nearby.
