Abstract: |
The evaluation demonstrated that significant deposits were well preserved across much of the area below the existing shopping centre. Depths to the top of significant deposits were established which produced well-preserved 17th/18th century horizons. Residual medieval and Roman material indicated the potential for earlier deposits surviving at greater depth. Of particular significance was the survival of Roman remains below the floors of the cellar at the High Street frontage and the identification of well preserved areas of 17th century (and presumably earlier) deposits across much of the eastern half of the site. Roman deposits including painted wall plaster indicated the presence of a substantial building in the near vicinity. [Au(abr)] |
