Abstract: |
A trench was excavated, which revealed natural late Holocene alluvial sand at a depth of 3.5m below ground level, overlain by a sequence of alluvial organic silts and sands indicating a vegetated flood-plain environment. The deposition of organic silts and peat indicated that the area was subject to periodic overbank floods but gradually became more stable and by the late medieval period had developed into a backwater swamp. This backwater swamp became inundated with silt-laden water, probably in a broad channel environment during the post-medieval period, as indicated by the deposition of organic silts containing finds of this date. The post-medieval silts were sealed by over 2m of 19th and 20th century dumping of industrial waste, possibly initially in an attempt to reclaim or consolidate a boggy area. These dumps reflected the known use of the site as a ship engine manufacturing works and tin box factory during this period. No archaeological structures or features were revealed. [Au(abr)] |
