Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the development of the site, specifically proposed building 5. The report concluded that there was the potential for the discovery of features and artefacts from the prehistoric to post-medieval periods as Neolithic, Roman and Anglo-Saxon artefacts had been recovered in the vicinity. Bridge Street and Tilehouse Street had possibly existed as thoroughfares since at least the early 12th century and may have formed part of the western boundary to the proposed late Saxon town. It was felt possible therefore that evidence for Saxon settlement or the town boundary may be encountered during the archaeological evaluation. The conjectural plan of the Carmelite friary suggested that all the buildings and the cemetery were on the eastern side of the River Hiz. However it was possible that some of the monastic buildings may have been on the western bank of the river, or that the land was used for some other identifiable activity. The remains of these, or of garden features of the medieval date, may be encountered during any archaeological fieldwork. [Au(adp)] |
