Abstract: |
Three trenches were excavated in order to determine the antiquity of the mounded enclosure of the dependency area and to establish whether remains of the earlier Napier House had survived in this area. Artefacts of mid/late 18th century date in layers indicated that the mound had been constructed in a single event, probably in the late 18th to early 19th centuries. Roofing tile fragments and other building demolition rubble were thought to have been derived from the Napier House, which was still inhabited in the 1780s. No structural remains of ancient buildings were encountered in the area investigated. The absence of an old ground surface indicated that the ground surface had been reduced prior to the construction of both of the mound and the access road. [Au(abr)] |
