Abstract: |
A detailed geophysical survey was carried out within two playing fields south of Goffs Lane where a scheme of redevelopment had been proposed. The survey employed a fluxgate gradiometer and soil electrical resistivity meter. The main feature mapped by the geophysical surveys comprised a complex network of positive magnetic anomalies, of linear form, whose character was consistent with a system of land drainage. In this instance, the drains were strongly magnetic and hence were likely to have been ceramic. A number of iron pipes may have also been present. Owing to the presence of the buried pipes, and scatters of brick and iron debris, it proved difficult to characterise more subtle geophysical anomalies of possible archaeological interest. However, careful examination of the survey data enabled a number of soil-filled ditches to be conjectured: further characterisation of these features would call for an additional programme of research involving selective trial trenching.
