Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out on a site occupying land to the rear of 8/12 High Street, Ludgershall. The site lay within the likely area of medieval settlement, and was crossed by boundaries which, on topographic grounds, may have fossilised an extension to the town defences centred on the castle to the north. The High Street frontage was found to be considerably disturbed by infilled cellars and other deep disturbance, so that the proposed trench in that area had to be relocated to the rear of the former property line. One truncated linear feature containing only medieval finds was located by this trench, a probable gully. Other trenches failed to locate any pre-modern deposits or finds, and demonstrated that there had been some general truncation of levels coupled with a high level of localised disturbance in these backland zones. No evidence for the supposed line of the early defences was recovered. [Au(abr)] |
