Abstract: |
The report considered the archaeological potential of the site, and the likely impact on this of the proposed redevelopment. The site potentially contained preserved alluvial and peat deposits which might contain important evidence for the changing environment during the development of the Thames estuary, and the exploitation of the area by the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age peoples. There was the possibility of understanding more about the prehistoric and later development of this part of the Thames estuary from alluvial deposits, structural remains and occupation evidence that may have still existed on the site. Historic maps of the floodplain showed large scale medieval and post-medieval river defences and land drainage schemes, and suggested river walls, drainage ditches and sluice structures may be present. The principal impact of the proposed works would involve the removal of any archaeological deposits and features surviving beneath the modern ground level. Peat deposits dating from the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods were likely to have been present on the site. These deposits may have preserved or contained features or artefacts which predated or were contemporary with the peat deposition. There was a paucity of later Roman and Saxon remains in the area, and it was therefore unlikely that remains dating from these periods would be encountered on the site. Apart from Lombard's Wall, which was Tudor in origin, there was no clear indication of any specific medieval flood defences, fields, or drainage schemes in the vicinity of the site. It was uncertain if features associated with the Lombard's Wall flood defence would have survived subsequent post-medieval redevelopment of the site. Post-medieval features cut into contemporary ground surface such as cellars, wall foundations, drains and pits may have survived on the site. The report concluded that further investigation may be necessary to determine the exact nature and depth of such deposits with particular reference to any surviving prehistoric peat deposits. This evaluation could take place at the same time as future geotechnical investigations undertaken by the developer. [Au(abr)] |
