Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site for an office development established that the site had been occupied by Spicer's Hall, a medieval building built in the mid-fourteenth century. In the post-medieval period further buildings had been added and the area became known as Blackhall. Warehouses were added in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of these buildings were damaged by fire in 1906 and then finally destroyed by bombing in 1940. A medieval water-mill which would have been adjacent to the Frome before its diversion in 1240-47 was also recorded in the vicinity and excavations on adjacent areas had recovered medieval building remains and organic deposits relating to the mid-13th century. Although modern development had taken place on the site, the building had been constructed on piled foundations which may have caused little disruption to the archaeological deposits. [Auth adap] |
