Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out in advance of redevelopment at a site which lay within a Loal Area of Archaeological Importance, and was situated between the inner and outer defences of the area identified as Roman Clausentum. Roman activity, Saxon graves and Saxon artefacts had been recorded in the surrounding area. During the evaluation, a number of undated features were recorded. These included a ditch, two possible post-holes and a linear feature. Two sherds of Roman pottery, two fragments of modern brick and two fragments of roof slate were recovered. It was noted that no peaty or marshy deposits had been observed, confirming that the area had been dry land since at least the Roman period. [AIP] |
