Abstract: |
An evaluation of the proposed site of an extension to a sand and gravel quarry was undertaken. Earlier desk-top assessment had identified that medieval ridge and furrow field systems with a relatively high group value covered parts of the site and the surrounding area. A nearby avenue at Elvaston formed part of a landscaped park with a Grade II Listed status. The evaluation involved an aerial photograph assessment, a walkover survey, an auger programme and an earthwork survey. Although a fair proportion of the ridge and furrow appeared to have been destroyed or severely damaged, both surveys highlighted the extent to which the land had been cultivated in the medieval period. Several possible palaeochannels were identified by the aerial photographic assessment, and the auger programme established that there was at least one major set of palaeochannels running east-west across the site. It was noted that there was a high probablilty that pre-medieval sites were present, buried beneath the alluvium which covered the site. [AIP] |
