Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the area of a proposed Wind Cluster. The field inspection survey confirmed the absence of any known archaeological sites of national importance, including Scheduled sites, within the area of proposed developments. There were, however, a number of archaeological sites, which included a Listed Building, within the immediate vicinity. Most of these were within a 1km radius of the development, and one known record existed within the boundary of the site as defined by the development proposals. This was the site of a pillbox, built in c.1940 as part of the defence of Britain. It presumably would have been built to cover the Choseley crossroad, and had been pushed into an old sandpit adjacent to the Choseley to Docking road, in the north western corridor of the development area. The majority of the sites and finds lay in the fields that surrounded the crossroads at Choseley, to the west, and north west of the development area. Choseley was known as a deserted medieval village or settlement. In terms of the proposed development, there were not thought to be any remains pertaining to the DMV within the development boundary, and any areas of ground disturbance for the turbines were sufficiently far enough away not to affect any known buried archaeological remains or upstanding earth works or buildings. Roman activity was mainly confined to an area outside of a 1km radius of the turbines, though there remained a significant potential for stray finds of all periods. Construction of the foundations at the proposed turbine positions would not have a direct physical impact upon any of the known recorded archaeological sites within the area, or the pillbox recorded within the development boundary. The predicted physical impact of the wind cluster upon recorded archaeological remains was therefore considered to be minimal. [Au(abr)] |
