Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of proposed residential development of the site. Three trial trenches were excavated across the site and the evaluation demonstrated that no archaeological remains were present within these trenches. The natural deposits exposed in the trenches demonstrated that the area had been marshland in the medieval and post-medieval periods. Cultural artefacts recovered suggested that rubbish was thrown into the marsh during the medieval period. A considerable build up in the level of the land over the marsh deposits had occurred on the site during the medieval and post-medieval periods. This was followed by a phase of ground raising and levelling which presumably took place in order to prepare the site for the construction of Victorian buildings. [Au(adp)] |
