Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during excavations for new drain runs, manholes and lightwells, together with limited work on brick vaults and ground floor levels, in connection with the conversion of a warehouse building into residential accommodation. The development site lay within the late 13th century Blackfriars Priory, over the north aisle and part of the preaching nave of the church. Remains of the church had been observed in the vicinity in 1915, and during a watching brief in 1983. During the 1996-7 watching brief, part of a pier base belonging to the north aisle of the church and two in situ human burials were recorded beneath the basement slab within no. 1 Carter Court. A quantity of disarticulated human bone was also found. Other features in this part of the site included a medieval chalk wall and a 16th-17th century brick cellar. Two test pits in the basement of 77 Carter Court indicated evidence of the post-Great Fire (1666) cellar wall. A building survey was also undertaken, which concentrated on the late 17th century vaulted cellars and those areas of early brickwork visible on the ground floor of the building. The survey concluded that the cellars were typical examples of late Stuart domestic brickwork, representative of the rebuilding of the City after the Great Fire. There was no evidence of the re-use of foundations belonging to the Blackfriars Church. [Au(adp)] |
