Abstract: |
The archaeological assessment considered land at Brewery Road, currently the subject of a planning application for a food retail and petrol filling station development. No previous archaeological artefacts or features were known to have originated from across the site. Shortly after the enclosure of the Lampit Common fields in 1841, the study site had formed the lawns and parkland setting to a mansion, Lampits, situated immediately to east of the site. However, much of the site was occupied by substantial buildings constructed in the late 1960's/early 1970's which would have destroyed all archaeological evidence. Elsewhere on the site industrial buildings and localised areas of terracing would have similarly destroyed any archaeological potential. In these circumstances it was concluded that the archaeological potential of the site would be insufficient to warrant an archaeological response. [Au(adp)] |
