Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a trench for a mains pipeline, which passed through an area of archaeological sensitivity. In the surrounding area, Iron Age pottery had been found within pits and ditches, Neolithic flints had been recovered and cropmarks had been observed. Romano-British finds and a shrunken or shifted village had also been recorded. During the watching brief, no archaeological deposits or artefacts were observed; two sherds of 20th century porcelain were recovered from the spoil heap. It was noted that the trench excavated had been very narrow, and that the absence of artefacts and features did not mean that the area was not of archaeological significance. [AIP] |
