Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment and walkover survey was conducted in advance of a proposal to extend the existing customer services area. The location of the appraisal site was situated just outside the line of the curtain wall, within the curtilege of the Scheduled Ancient Monument (128680). A review of the existing archaeological information suggested that the site was located against the street drop of the bailey bank, upon a landscaped area of late 19th century made ground. Despite its proximity to the castle and the gatehouse, the site was considered to have had low potential for containing archaeological remains, although it was possible that hitherto unknown and unrecorded features against the castle bank may have existed, preserved below overlying deposits of made ground.
