Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out prior to the erection of two toposcopes and a new fence at the top of Warwick Castle Mound, within the area of Warwickshire SAM no. 94. The mound was the only visible survival of the original castle, built in 1068; it was occupied by a gun battery during the Civil War, and further alterations were carried out in the 18th-20th centuries. During the evaluation, a post-medieval foundation was observed and finds of pottery, animal bone, glass, clay pipe and roof tile were recovered. Much of the pottery was of 13th century date, although some post-medieval material was present. Part of the wall of the medieval shell keep was identified, and the top of the mound was found to lie c1.3m above the probable medieval ground level. This difference had probably been caused by earth imported to build the gun battery. Evidence for timber sockets within the masonry of the keep, perhaps constructed for a revetment for the battery, was observed. [AIP] |
