Abstract: |
The evaluation and building recording was undertaken prior to the proposed residential redevelopment of the site in order to assess the likely survival of the earlier mill remains and the presence of the wheel-pit. The results of the evaluation suggested that the majority of the area of proposed redevelopment was not truncated by later activity but rather sealed by it, and that there was a strong likelihood of significant archaeological remains still being present within areas to be affected by the proposed development. The discovery of the wheel-pit, intact and capped with concrete, led to a further phase of recording work. The wheel-pit showed several phases of remodelling prior to its eventual abandonment at some point during the turn of the 20th century. [Au(abr)] |
