Abstract: |
An archaeological investigation was undertaken on a Victorian pond in the grounds of the Cluniac Priory of Our Lady in response to a program of works designed to improve the area. The site lay within the southern precinct of the early medieval Cluniac Priory of Our Lady, a SAM located immediately north of the Anglo-Saxon defensive perimeter. The priory was established in 1107 and much of the extensive structural remains dated from this time. Initial archaeological investigations recorded the remains of a Victorian path, beyond which were dumped deposits of soil designed to landscape the surrounding area. These overlay a possible buried soil. Subsequent monitoring of machine excavation of the pond silts elucidated elements of the pond's construction but identified only Victorian and later deposits within the pond. [Au(abr)] |
