Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of four sites under consideration for a proposed sewage treatment works was undertaken. Prehistoric burial mounds had been recorded in the area; one, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, lay at the apex of a hill overlooking Site E. A probable Iron Age enclosure lay to the east of the sites, and medieval and 16th century lynchets had been recorded in the surrounding countryside. Several late Saxon manors were likely to have existed in the area, and medieval occupation of Bridport was documented; a rope-making industry had been established there by the early 13th century. 18th and 19th century buildings in the town reflected a later revival of rope- and net-making. It was concluded that Sites B and E, located close to possible prehistoric and Romano-British settlement remains noted on aerial photographs, had the greatest archaeological potential. Modern development had severely compromised the survival of any archaeological remains within Site F. [AIP] |
