Abstract: |
Archaeological work was carried out at the site of a golf course, where fieldwalking prior to construction of the course had recorded scatters of Neolithic flint material. A series of test-pits and larger test stations were excavated in order to investigate the possibility of Neolithic settlement activity. Two trenches were also dug across Bran's Ditch, one of four ditch and bank systems running across southern Cambridgeshire. The test-pits indicated that activity in the area had predominantly been of Middle to Late Bronze Age date. Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age flints were recovered, and Bronze Age pottery was found. No features were observed. Excavation across Bran's Ditch revealed post holes and a ditch, representing the remains of revetment features relating to the creation of the bank. It was concluded that the prehistoric artefact clusters identified were generally ephemeral in nature rather than forming part of a substantial settlement. [AIP] |
