Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the selection of a route for a link road. Sites of archaeological interest recorded in the surrounding area included Fleet Marston deserted medieval village, a Romano-British settlement, the course of Roman Akeman Street and two Scheduled Ancient Monuments. One SAM was a well-preserved medieval moated site, which lay near a shrunken village. The second consisted of two areas of medieval village earthworks, at Quarrendon. Artefacts found in the area included Romano-British coins, metalwork and pottery, medieval pottery, post-medieval pottery and clay pipe. Three sites relating to the Second World War were noted. Further areas of archaeological potential were identified on the basis of place-name evidence or features noted during field reconnaissance. It was concluded that the more northerly of the two road route options would be preferable in view of the importance of the Quarrendon Earthworks, and that further studies of the road corridor would be essential.
