Abstract: |
Desk-based appraisal of a proposed development site identified that three sites of potential archaeological interest would be affected by the development. These consisted of Farington Mill and Lower Farington Hall and Moat, which were probably of medieval origin, and Higher Farington Hall, the date of which was unknown. No prehistoric sites were known in the vicinity, although the wider surrounding area appeared to have been utilised since Mesolitic times. The site was flanked by a former peatland complex, indicating that pockets of peat or other waterlogged material with archaeological and palaeoenvironmental potential could occur within the development area. A Roman road passed to the east of the site, but no evidence of Roman settlement had been recorded nearby. The greater part of the site had a relatively low archaeological potential, but it was recommended that a further programme of documentary research and fieldwork should be commissioned, to cover the areas of Lower Farington Hall and Farington Mill and their associated features.
