Abstract: |
Archaeological evaluation work on the only surviving undeveloped street frontage, on Raingate Street, established the presence of Late Saxon/early medieval and medieval buildings, and confirmed the inclusion of Raingate Street in the medieval core of the town. The recovery of unstratified and residual Ipswich ware pottery held the possibility of earlier settlement. The presence of medieval pits to the rear of the properties was consistent with medieval back yards and gardens, and supported the interpretation of the buildings as dwellings. [Au] |
