Abstract: |
A desk-based study to identify the archaeological implications of the proposed development of a retail supermarket and associated car parking on land to the east of the historic core of Boston, outside the Barditch, was undertaken. The study showed that the northern part of the application area had been developed during the medieval period with properties being constructed fronting on to Bargate. The southern and eastern parts of the area, however, did not seem to have been fully developed until the late 18th and early 19th centuries. However, the beginnings of much of this post-medieval development could be traced back to the early 17th century when a considerable quantity of material was deposited in order to raise the ground level. The Barditch was culverted from the end of the 17th century, paving the way for increased development of the site. [Au(abr)] |
