Abstract:
An excavation was carried out at the proposed site of an office development within the medieval town of Marlow. Evidence of continuous activity from the 10th/11th century to the present was revealed. A series of Saxo-Norman and medieval pits, apparently of primarily non-domestic function, were recorded. A possible beamslot and associated post holes were interpreted as evidence for a timber-framed medieval building. A cellar, possibly of 17th or 18th century date, was recorded beneath the building. This may have been part of a later structure, or may have been inserted whilst the original building was still in existence. Two chalk-lined pits, a property boundary, two wells and a small number of post-medieval cess and refuse pits were also recorded. [Au(abr)]
