Abstract: |
An assessment of the proposed site of a residential development was carried out. Trial trenching had originally been planned, but was found to be unnecessary due to the depth of modern dumping over the site. The site's condition was therefore assessed using information from a recent ground investigation survey, and by carrying out documentary research. A complex of medieval or later fishponds which probably belonged to the manor of Brownsover lay on the site, within an area of medieval ridge and furrow. The ponds were in an eroded state in the 1950s, and were buried in up to 2.5m of debris during the 1960s. Any surviving remains were likely to have been poorly preserved. Given these factors, as well as the large number of medieval fish ponds elsewhere in the county, and the severe practical difficulties of carrying out an excavation, it was concluded that the site should be regarded as of low archaeological potential.
