Abstract: |
A desktop study was commissioned for 112ha of land proposed for sand and gravel extraction. The area proved to be an extremely dense and rich archaeological landscape equivalent to the well researched Lower Welland Valley 15km to the west. The known archaeology was dominated by Iron Age/Roman occupation and field system complexes, with evidence of prehistoric activity including a Bronze Age barrow. The whole area was deemed worthy of further archaeological investigation, and as a result of this, a decision as to the constraints to be placed on the extraction, should it go ahead, could be made.
