Abstract: |
A possible ditch section exposed by excavations for a swimming pool was observed by the county archaeologist, who arranged for a brief recording and investigation exercise to be undertaken by archaeological contractors. The site lay to the south-west of Pylle Manor House, a Grade II Listed Building. During the recording exercise, environmental samples were taken from the lowest silts within the ditch. No dating evidence for the feature was recovered. However, its large dimensions indicated that it was likely to have represented part of a medieval moat. A flint core of Mesolithic or Bronze Age date and two sherds of pottery, one of 15th-17th and one of 16th-17th century date, were recovered from the upper fill of the ditch. This fill was interpreted as a redeposited bank, backfilled into the open ditch in order to level up the ground surface after the feature had become obsolete, possibly in the 17th or 18th century.
