Abstract:
An archaeological desk based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed construction of a 27-storey office and residential tower with basement parking. The assessment established that the site lay within the post-medieval Lambeth potteries. Excavation on the northern two thirds of the site in 1980, 1987 and 1990 had confirmed historical and cartographic evidence for a pottery on site when four kilns and waste products dating from 1820 were recorded. In addition, pottery (delftware, stoneware and earthenware) was recovered across the site dating from 1730 to 1864. The excavation also recovered a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flint tool assemblage from a deposit of clay rich sandy soil that directly overlay the natural gravel deposits. This deposit had clearly been mixed, as there were also sherds of 10th-16th century pottery within this deposit. A large Victorian warehouse/industrial building with deep basements formerly occupied the southern third of the site. The basement would have removed any archaeological deposits in this area. The proposed development would entail deep foundations and also basement parking. However, as the DGLA excavations and the basement of the Victorian industrial building would have removed all archaeological deposits across the site, the development would have no archaeological impact. Therefore, there was no need for any further archaeological investigations. [Au(adp)]
