Abstract:
<summary>A detailed record of the spire was made prior to restoration work. The earliest parts of All Saints date to the 13th century, the spire being added in the 14th. It is an octagonal structure, with filleted rolls at the angles, and a window in each of the cardinal faces. It tops a 27m high tower, itself stands 36m high, and is 7.2m wide max. It is made of sandstone, with a solid top section. The north wall of the tower leans north, and the spire is curved in its upper section. Earliest known repairs date from the 17th century. [...some of the text missing from copy of report inspected...] In the late 19th century, the angle rolls were replaced, the sides pointed and the spire lights restored. Restoration continued in 1894. In 1903 the church re-opened, and in 1907 the weathercock was repaired and re-gilded. By 1913, the stability of the tower was causing serious concern. Further repairs were undertaken later this century. The recording work undertaken by CHAU involved the production of detailed stone-by-stone drawings including constructional features such as mortar types, presence of render, details of iron strappings, fixings and ties, putlog-holes and decorative features. Four types of mortar and two main varieties of stone were identified. Many stones were blackened with soot, and lichen was present on the south-facing sides. {italon}AIP{italoff}
