Abstract: |
Archaeological investigations, comprising watching briefs and the archaeological excavation of three lift pits, were carried out before and during the construction of student accommodation, at a site where an earlier evaluation had revealed pits, post holes, construction trenches and metalling. These features had indicated possible middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval occupation. During the excavation, an undated post hole and the probable end of a ditch, the latter containing burnt flint and a fragment of prehistoric or middle Saxon pottery, were recorded. A probable foundation and a spread of limestone blocks observed within a service trench may have been associated with a medieval chantry complex known to have lain close to the site. Post-medieval features included a probable quarry, a gully, a small ditch and three post or stake holes which probably represented a fence or boundary. 17th-18th century pottery was recovered.
